Welcome to the Home Inventory Management program. I will go
over the major questions you might have while using this
program. It is setup for use with a color graphics
card. It may function okay on a monochrome monitor, but I
have not tried it. It is also setup for an epson compatible
printer. It was tested on a Panasonic 1180 in the epson
mode. All reports are done in compressed mode except for the
label printing. Now lets get into a question and answer
session.
Q. How do I get started?
A. This program will need to be stored on your hard disk if
you have one. It will work on a 1.44 or 1.2 floppy, but of
course you will be limited as to the number of records you
can put on it. After storing into a directory of your choice
type in 'HOME' (no quotes).
Q. Now what do I do?
A. At this point you can select any of the inventory
databases shown. Select 'A' (quotes are mine)
Q. There is already an entry in it. What are the letters
below the screen?
A. This is the status line. You will notice that there is a
'HELP' word on that line and now go ahead and press 'h' and a
help screen will appear. Lets cover each one so that you
will not have any questions. By the way each input screen is
set up just alike except for the tally command and I will
discuss that at the proper time. The first is 'RET' - when
an 'r' is press the cursor will go to the key field and wait
for your request. You do not have to type an exact or
complete entry in this field. The next one is 'BEG' - this
will take you to the beginning record in the database by
pressing a 'b'. 'END' is just what it says - it takes you to
the last record. You need only type the first letter
representing the command for any of the commands shown on the
status line. 'NEXT' will advance you one record forward with
each pressing of 'n'. 'PREV' will take you in reverse one
record at a time. 'SKIP' will take you forward or reverse by
typing in a number that corresponds the number of records you
want to skip. By using the minus sign '-' before the number
you will go in reverse. 'MODIFY' will allow you to change
the existing record shown. 'M' or modify is the default
command. 'ADD' will let you add records to the database. ADD
automatically continues until you press Esc upon completion
of your entering data. 'COPY' is very useful when entering
many similar records. It relieves you from having to type
each and every field. 'DEL' removes records and when you
quit it will ask if you want to pack and normally you will
answer yes. It will then remove that record(s) and reindex
for you. 'LIST' will display several records at a time with
some of the more pertinent information listed. 'FILT' is
probably the most useful of all the commands when you are
looking for data. You can filter on any field EXCEPT a date
field. I have added a month field in the address and gift
database so that you can filter on a month for birthdays and
anniversaries for a given month. 'TALLY' will count the
number of records in a database and in those that have cost
and price fields will also total the amounts. You can use a
filter first and then press the tally 't' and it will total
just for the filtered records. 'HELP' list what each command
key on the status line does. 'QUIT' takes you back to the
main menu except when you had previously deleted a record, it
will ask if you want to pack the database.
Q. Where do you find the rating shown on the laserdisc/tape
database?
A. You can use any one of several on the market - I use the
"TV MOVIES AND VIDEO GUIDE" BY LEONARD MALTIN (c) signet
Q. What do you mean by quality of LaserDisc/Tape?
A. This is my own judgement as to the quality of transfer,
audio, etc. I use GOOD (1-9) to determine in my own
judgement as to the quality. If I have a LaserDisc that is
defective then I start the entry S1 (for side 1) noisy etc.
The reports menu is setup to look for defective disc by
looking for an 'S' as the beginning letter. Also on
LaserDisc that you have purchased but not watched yet I put
in 'INT CHECK OK' (quotes mine). This means that when I
initially scanned the LaserDisc I did not see any defects.
You will probably not use this for tapes since by their very
nature cannot be scanned very quickly and would require
rewinding when completed. It is also not that easy to see a
defect on a tape when scanning.
Q. What do you mean by label?
A. This is the company (abbreviation) that released the
movie.
Q. What do you mean by 'PRESSED/MAN...'
A. This is the company that pressed the LaserDisc or
manufactured (dubbed) the tape.
Q. What does all of that mean in the example?
A. S,CX,DS,DSS,CC means stereo,cx noise reduction, digital
sound (LaserDisc only), Dolby Surround Sound (trademark of
Dolby) and closed caption.
Q. How is studio different from label?
A. The label is the company that released the movie and the
studio is the company that has the copyright on the movie.
Q. It is nice to have all of this information from all of
these inventories, but why do I need it?
A. In many cases people underestimate just how many
valuables that they have when trying make an insurance claim.
This is the main reason this program was developed. I
suddenly discovered just how under insured I was when I
completed my inventory. In addition this program can be
invaluable when a theft has taken place if you have taken the
time to enter your serial numbers. Also in the home
inventory program I have a field to enter key numbers on
lockable items so that if you forgot what it goes to, all you
have to do is filter on the key number that you had
previously enter and it will find the item it goes with. You
can enter credit cards, insurance policies etc.
This has been just a brief description of what this program
will do. By using it and playing with the various functions
you will probably find even more ways to track items. In the
beginning just add a few records into each inventory and
practice adding, deleting, filtering, etc., until you feel
you have mastered all the various commands. You can then
complete your inventory and get print outs to be put up in a
safe place (safety deposit box, etc.).
If after trying this program you feel that it will benefit you then
please register it. The cost for registration is $10. Future versions
will will be up loaded to various BBS and your original registration
fee will entitle you to use the updates without any further compensation.
If you do not see the updates on your BBS, the send a disk and $3.00
along with your name and address and I will forward you the latest
version. Any suggestions or bugs that you find, please let me know.
This program is shareware and is distributed without warranty either
expressed or implied.
